A History of Waxing

A History of Waxing

Waxing over the centuries

Removing hair from the body is certainly not new. A smooth and hairless body was the standard of beauty, youth and innocence for a woman in Ancient Egypt. Egyptian woman used depilatory creams and waxed with a sticky emulsion made of oil and honey, similar to what we now call 'sugaring'.

The Greeks and Waxing

Later, the Greeks adopted this ideal of smoothness as we can see from Greek sculptures. The sculptures of women are polished and shiny, there's no body hair and there is no pubic hair; the sculptures of men also have no body hair but do show pubic hair!

The Greeks thought pubic hair on women was ugly and so upper-class ladies removed it. The Romans did not like pubic hair either and young girls began removing it as soon as it first appeared. They used tweezers and had a kind of depilatory cream. Waxing was also a way of removing hair and this was done with resin or pitch.

Waxing in the Mediterranean

Albanian, Mediterranean, Arab and Turkish women have been waxing for centuries. They often used sugar-based waxes made with lemon. But today’s variations include oils and scents to reduce discomfort.

The practice of waxing in these cultures was for personal hygiene and/or for religious reasons because body hair of any sort on women was considered socially unacceptable.

The habit of depilating went out of fashion after Catherine de Medici, who was then Queen of France, forbade her ladies-in-waiting to remove their pubic hair.

Male Genital Waxing

Waxing the male genital area is relatively new to western cultures and is done for cosmetic and hygiene reasons. Men who opt for a Hollywood wax treatment have the entire pubic area depilated. When depilating the male pubic area, all hairs from the penis, scrotum, buttocks, groin, anus and mons pubis bone are removed accurately and professionally. A Boyzilian is a Brazilian wax for men and is similar to a Hollywood however a thin strip of hair is left on the mons pubis.

Is waxing common for Men?

Nowadays, more and more men have their pubic area depilated with warm wax. In addition to a Hollywood and Boyzillian wax treatments, our most popular requests are for hair removal on the back, chest, shoulders and abdomen.

Waxing the legs is very popular among athletes. For example, the avid cyclist is less likely to get infections in a fall if the legs are depilated and smooth legs on a swimmer provide less resistance in water.
